Kristian Bush Felt ‘Joy’ Over Sugarland Reunion

Although anxiety and pressure could get the best of Bush and Jennifer Nettles in their comeback, the two can't wait to continue the story of Sugarland as a steady partnership.

When Kristian Bush got the call about the possibility of Sugarland reuniting, he immediately jumped on board for the opportunity to continue the duo’s story.

For the past handful of years, Bush and Sugarland partner Jennifer Nettles focused on their own solo careers. While Nettles experimented with her own music career, Bush spent time producing and writing behind the scenes of other artists’ projects. Nevertheless, they both felt the serendipitous nature of getting back together at the right time and it was just as though they never left.

“I was kind of excited to hear what she’d been up to. I had been writing songs like daily since then, so the idea of sitting in a room writing songs had no fear on it for me. It was just the joy of getting to see someone you hadn’t seen in awhile,” Bush told Taste of Country.

Despite their time apart from one another working on separate entities, their collaboration skills came flooding back in instantly without skipping a beat. Bush, who always wanted to bring Sugarland back, felt the musical passion between the two and it led them to create their latest single in a matter of minutes.

“I think the timing just worked out for Jennifer. She just reached out and I was like, ‘Alright, let’s see if we’ve still got it from a writing perspective. So we sat down and wrote and the first single (“Still the Same”) was the first song that we wrote in like 45 minutes. I was like ‘OK, that’s gonna work just fine,’” he explained.

The pair announced their return at the CMA Awards to a huge fan reaction with positive notions. Anxiety could have weighed over their decision, but Bush knows he and Nettles have put in the energy that will prove Sugarland is back and ready for action.

“Oh yeah, it’s awesome,” Bush said. “I’m excited nervous. I’ve got rehearsals this evening for our tour. I’ve got three more days to write for this. I’m staying up late, I’m getting up early before the sun comes up. Like this is it. This is what you train for your whole life.”

Sugarland’s comeback single, “Still the Same,” is available now.
