Kylie Minogue on Meeting Dolly Parton: ‘What a Presence, What a Light’

"I sorted that and met her and I went to pieces. I don’t know what I said. I think my hands ended up around her waist, I think," Minogue raved.

Dolly Parton isn’t just an icon within the country music world, but her popularity spans across the globe into the heart of artists like Kylie Minogue.

The pop-rock singer appeared on The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday night (5/1) and raved over her chance meeting with Parton herself. After using her connections to talk with Parton right before one of her big shows of last year, Minogue was transfixed on Parton’s aura and still can’t remember just exactly how she reacted to the starstruck memory.

“I met her before her show at the Hollywood Bowl at the end of 2016 and it was a last-minute thing, so I had to call in a few favors like the night of the Dolly Parton concert. So I sorted that and met her and I went to pieces. I don’t know what I said. I think my hands ended up around her waist, I think…but what a presence, what a light. She was amazing,” Minogue gushed over the moment.

The meet-and-greet, among other things, inspired Minogue to create a country-sounding album and use that authenticity within her songwriting to influence her new sound. Visiting the city of Nashville made that vision even more clear thanks to the dreamy vibe that Music City gives off to all of its visitors.

“Long story short, we went to Nashville for two weeks, and then everything made sense, this kind of country influence,” the singer explained about the recording process.
