It’s the news we never expected – Lady Gaga is going country!

Well, sort of, but the iconic pop singer (nee Stefani Germanotta) will star in a remake of the film A Star Is Born, alongside actor Bradley Cooper. Originally filmed in 1954 with Judy Garland and then again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand, the film will follow Jackson Maine (Cooper), a country singer who is becoming a thing of the past. Maine discovers unknown singer Ally (Germanotta) and their relationship leads to romance. Eventually, Maine mentors Ally into super-stardom, far exceeding his own, causing issues for the fading country star.

Gaga shared the news of her role with a photo on Instagram.

“I am so excited to star in my first movie alongside someone I’m so lucky to call my friend. I always wanted to be an actress on the big screen. The story of “A Star is Born” is so special and I’m so grateful to Bradley for making my dream come true. Can’t wait for you to meet Ally. She has her first scene in 5….” she writes with the pic of her singing and Cooper looking on.

The movie will also mark the first time Lady Gaga has gone by her real name, Deadline reports. The publication also shared that she will write and compose original songs for the project.

A Star Is Born is not the first time Gaga has been featured on film. She previously won a Golden Globe for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel and AHS: Roanoke and was most recently nominated for an Oscar for the song “Til It Happens To You” from The Hunting Ground.

The film is slated for release on Sept. 28, 2018.
