Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins’ home life with two young daughters can be challenging at times and in a new video interview with Southern Living, Akins opens up about becoming a mother and the advice she has learned from her own mom.

Long before the couple adopted Willa Gray and had their biological daughter, Ada James, Akins admits that she never imagined being a mom. Now in the midst of motherhood, she looks back on the things she has learned from her own mother.

“Her spirit is what I love most because it’s the sweetest and it’s unbreakable, truly,” Akins shares. “We could be in the worst situation ever and she will come up with some amazing, positive reason why it’s happening or make us all laugh.”

Akins adds that her own mother, who was adopted, always encouraged her to do whatever it is she wants in life and stressed the importance of being true to herself. This advice has been on her mind when Akins has found herself in situations where she’s not quite sure how to act.

“Being in the same room with Beyonce and Jay-Z, you’re in this room with these people that the world adores and you’re like, ‘ What do I do? What do I say? How do I act?’ and I can always hear her [saying], ‘Be who you are. That’s who you’re meant to be and that’s who you should be,'” Akins says.

Being a mother is a full-time job for Akins and she says nothing else matters when it comes to her daughters. “If I want to spend some more time at home or have some down time I can just say, ‘I just want to be with my girls’ and that’s totally acceptable,” Akins adds.
