Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so Lindsay Ell decided to show her love for John Mayer by doing her own rendition of one of his most acclaimed albums, Continuum.

Dubbing her version as The Continuum Project, it was actually the mastermind of Sugarland’s Kristian Bush that gave her the initiative to go after this project and take on the difficulty of re-creating something so well-known. Although she’s always been a fan of Mayer, she never thought of taking on Mayer’s work in her own regard for a recorded result.

“Recording Continuum was the thing that started it all,” Ell said of the recording process. “Kristian [Bush] taught me some of the most valuable lessons as my producer from this ‘homework’ assignment. He gave me three rules: I needed to play all the instruments myself, I needed to record it alone in my studio, and I had two weeks. Through it all, I remembered all the things I first loved about making music. I can’t wait for my fans to hear the music that helped shaped ‘Criminal’ and The Project!”

Ell learned a lot of her guitar skills herself, but she honed in on the craft opening up for Brad Paisley on the Weekend Warrior World Tour. She’ll gain even more experience from Keith Urban himself, when she tags on to a few dates of his Graffiti U Tour going on later this fall.

The Continuum Project will release on Friday, May 25.
