2018 is off to a rocky start for Loretta Lynn as she fell and broke her hip on New Year’s Day. According to the legendary performer’s daughter, Patsy, Lynn had a run-in with her new puppy, which likely contributed to the accident.

“She has a new puppy — we don’t really know if she was chasing after the puppy or what, but she slid and fractured her hip. We blame the puppy!” Patsy told PEOPLE with a laugh. “Though the puppy brings smiles so there’s that.”

While a broken hip could easily put a damper on one’s mood, Patsy shared that her mother is stay positive and working hard to healing up quickly.

“At my mom’s age it’s so dangerous when it comes to the hip, so we’re all just grateful she seems to be okay. She’s up putting weight on it and starting her rehab now,” she revealed. “She’s in great spirits — she’s just aggravated because she was recovering so well and getting around. Now this is a setback,”

“She said she’s just mad about being back to laying up watching TV! Hopefully, she will recover quickly,” Patsy continued. “She’s strong — it’s amazing she’s able to go through all she’s been through. She had a stroke in May and has been having band rehearsals and getting around great by herself; she’s recording, she’s finishing up another album. That’s what she’s been focusing on. She’s nonstop but she’s always been that way — it’s what keeps her going.”

Word of Lynn’s fall spread quickly after her sister, Crystal Gayle, tweeted, asking for “love and prayers” as Lynn recovered.

“I was with Loretta yesterday. She is in good spirits and is doing as well as can be expected with this type of injury,” wrote Gayle.

Lynn spent much of 2017 recovering after suffering a stroke in May. Though she canceled many of her public appearances, she did attend the Country Music Hall of Fame induction in October to welcome her longtime friend Alan Jackson in as an inductee. She’ll spend a little more time off the road as she recovers from her latest injury. No word on how long her rehabilitation will take.
