The minute Luke Bryan got the call to become a judge on the updated version of American Idol, he dialed up another good country buddy of his to give him the scoop on how the television world works.

Bryan turned to none other than Blake Shelton, who got his Hollywood start as a coach on NBC’s hit reality competition show, The Voice. But it didn’t come as easy as fan may think since Bryan likes to throw a little playful shade toward Shelton whenever he gets the chance. He did just that while chatting about his gig on American Idol while hanging out on the set of Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday (3/7).

Hinting that Shelton was in on the hiring of Bryan for the ABC revival, the “Light It Up” singer couldn’t help but jab at Shelton’s big-wig status once he got dubbed as the Sexiest Man Alive by People.

“We were quite perplexed, but we got over it,” Bryan joked to Seth Meyers about the country community’s reaction to his newfound title. “No, he is a beautiful man…from a distance.”

But of course, Bryan won’t lose his Southern roots even if this TV role takes over a lot of his schedule because he always sticks to what keeps him a country man. He admitted to Meyers that a number of things put the redneck right back into his ways, especially when he spends time on his property.

“We have multiple pigs on the farm. That’s quite important. I have a farm truck that’s used just for the farm. It doesn’t even have a license plate, so you’re not even allowed to drive it on pavement. And lastly, I have hired a full-time bass fishing…I mean, I have a guy and this bass lake and his job is to grow the bass to the biggest bass in the world,” Bryan admitted to laughter among the audience.

Maybe after his time as a judge and his life on the road comes to a stop for a moment, he’ll be able to head back on the farm to check out the fish situation sooner rather than later.

The revival of American Idol will premiere on Sunday, March 11, at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
