Luke Bryan is quickly finding his footing as a judge on American Idol alongside Lionel Richie and Katy Perry. The Georgia native has long been a fan of Richie’s, but what about the pop princess he’s now come to know?

Turns out, Bryan remembers the first time he heard Perry’s 2008 breakout hit, “I Kissed A Girl.” At the time, the “Light It Up” singer was still a brand new act to the country music scene, trying to find his place in the genre. He’s had hit after hit since his start and it seems as if his ear for music has always been spot on.

“I remember the first time I heard ‘I Kissed a Girl and I Liked It,’ like I was just starting touring and I got my band guys on the bus and I was like, ‘Guys, this is what a huge ass pop hit sounds like.’ We’re sitting there jamming to [sings] ‘I kissed a girl,’ and obviously, that was Katy’s first endeavor,” shared Bryan recently.

Perry’s song went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks and laid the groundwork for her other hits like “Hot n Cold”, “California Gurls”, “Firework”, “E.T.”, “Teenage Dream”, “Roar” and “Dark Horse”.

Bryan, Perry and Richie will soon combine their musical powers to find the greatest unknown act when they take a seat at the judges table for the ABC revival of American Idol, slated to return in early 2018.
