It’s been a long time coming for fans of Maddie & Tae to hear new music from the duo, but they can finally relax now that the two are back and better than ever on “Friends Don’t.”

Toeing the line between just pals and future lovers, the ladies sing about the tense back-and-forth that comes with taking a relationship to the next step. While they note all the little things within the friendship allude to something on a more romantic level, they don’t necessarily feel as though a spark should ignite in that way between the two.

The track represents the maturity and growth within Maddie & Tae’s development over the past couple years, and they definitely hope their fans respond positively to the next step in the career.

“I hope our fans love this song as much as we do,” said Maddie Marlow in a press release. “Anything we ever do we have them in mind and want to always create music they can connect with. We have a big story to tell on this album, and ‘Friends Don’t’ is the beginning of it all.”

Opening up about a topic that many of their listeners, and even Maddie and Tae themselves, “Friends Don’t” really hits the nail on the head for the emotional content the two hope to create with their new sound.

“It feels so good to be back with a song like ‘Friends Don’t,'” Taylor Dye continued. “This song is everything we’ve always been. Honest, vulnerable and confident. We can’t wait for our fans to hear the rest of the record.”

Their new single marks the first endeavor for Maddie & Tae on the Mercury branch of the Universal Music Group label, after leaving Dot Records in 2017.
