When Mary Sarah set out to release her first-ever single since her time on NBC’s The Voice, she wanted to create a voice that represented the now in her life in a relatable way.

Enter “Without You,” the jazzy country tune that demands empowerment within one’s self following the negativity surrounding a breakup.

Dealing with the heartache of ending a three-year long-distance relationship, Mary Sarah felt quite conflicted between love and career. Depending on her optimistic perspective to get her through even the hardest of moments, she channeled her sadness into positivity through her lyrics in “Without You.” Rather than let the lost love hold her back on an uplifting future, she knew she could do bigger and better things regardless of the situation and “Without You” was born with all of the sassiness invited.

“I went through a relationship. The longest relationship I’ve been in, in my life, was three years and it was long distance. I gave a lot of myself in that relationship, and I mean, everyone knows with relationships you’ve got to be mutual. You’ve got to be giving on both sides. In this relationship, it just so happened that I was giving most of the time. He was in a different place in his life than I was. It was very difficult. The breakup actually happened in a time in my life where I really did not need it to happen. I was going through a very big thing in my career and it was kind of the last thing I needed to focus on. I’m very in a way thankful for it happening at that time, because it forced me to kind of look at the situation and go, ‘OK, I know I’ve been with this guy for three years, but here’s this career opportunity in front of me,’” Mary Sarah explained to Sounds Like Nashville during a phone interview recently.

Although she never experienced any sort of hatred toward the end of the relationship, she still knew she could succeed as an independent woman who didn’t need a man to hold her up. Mary Sarah continues to grow and develop post-breakup and “Without You” holds as the representation of the singer following her career into country music.

“I think this is a fantastic song to come out with and have people hear to kind of hear and state that this is where I’m at and this is who I am as of right now,” she explained. “Like I said, I’m forever changing as an artist. You can even look at bigger artist, the way their music changes over the years. It’s ever-changing. It’s not always going to sound the same. This song has stated that this is where I’m at right now, and this is what I love to sing and how I love to sing. That’s why we chose this song. I really hope people can relate to this song and help them get through the hard times.”
