In a shocking move Thursday (May 12), ABC announced that it was not planning on renewing the show Nashville for a fifth season.

Fans took to social media in an uproar, pleading for the network to bring back Rayna James and co. The city of Nashville’s mayor Megan Barry, also expressed her disappointment in the decision to cancel the show.

“We are incredibly disappointed to hear the news that ABC has not renewed the show Nashville for another season. The show has been an enormously successful promotional tool for our city, which is why the State of Tennessee and Metro Nashville were prepared to support production for a fifth season the be filmed here,” she wrote on Facebook. “This is a loss for ABC and for the millions of fans across the world who have grown to love this show. We have enjoyed hosting the cast and crew of the show over the last four years and look forward to future opportunities for film and television production here in Nashville.”

Several stars from the cast of Nashville also took to social media to thank fans for their support over the last four seasons.

“So grateful to so many for the dream that has been #Nashville. Not always easy to be Deacon. But to play him? An absolute joy and an honor,” Charles Esten tweeted.

A clearly surprised Chris Carmack, who played Will Lexington, also spoke out about the cancellation. “#Nashville will be so cherished by so many… Trying to wrap my head around it…” he wrote.

“My heartfelt thanks to all the fans of #Nashville,” added Will Chase. “And a special congrats to all the new shows starting their adventure on @ABCNetwork.”

Lennon and Maisy also tweeted about their time with the show. “Nashville is a magic that few have the chance to feel in a lifetime. 4 yrs with an amazing production, cast, and crew=eternity of gratitude”

Although the cast and fans are disappointed with ABC’s decision to move forward, Entertainment Weekly reports that the show is being shopped around for other networks.

“We’re looking for a new home. We never give up on a great show,” Lionsgate television group chairman Kevin Beggs reportedly wrote in an email to employees.

Nashville will wrap with its series finale this Wednesday, May 25.
