Miranda Lambert Was ‘Nervous’ to Be ‘Vulnerable’ on New Single ‘Vice’
"Vice" is Lambert's latest single released to country radio and makes it known that she is emotionally ready for the next step in her music career regardless of what people have been reading into.
Over the past year, Miranda Lambert has experienced the good, the bad and the ugly. After dealing with a highly publicized divorce from fellow country singer Blake Shelton, Lambert focused her time on the road and to making some new music that reflected what she’d be going through in her life. But that didn’t mean she wanted to make a record full of sad heartbreak songs.
Enter “Vice,” Lambert’s first single post-split and it’s not quite the zinger fans thought it may be a la “Gunpowder and Lead.” Rather, Lambert put her story on her sleeve by making “Vice” all about the therapeutic numbness of sex and alcohol with a bit of sultry broken guitar sounds in the background. In her interview about the single with Billboard though, the country singer admitted the song was vulnerable yet universal in several situations.
“And I feel like when you listen to this song, there’s really nothing to read into,” she told the publication. “It says what it says. Everybody has a vice. Everybody goes through a time in their life when they run to it a little bit more than when they don’t. When I’m journaling my life and putting it on paper to a melody and then allowing people to hear it, I can’t worry about what somebody might twist it into, because it’s not like I’m hiding anything.”
While there is no word on a title or a release date for Lambert’s next album, in which “Vice” will most likely be a part of, she did say that this time around, the honesty is clear as day in regards to her emotional songwriting.
“But you run to things more and you lean on things more than you normally do when you’re hurting. I was off the road last summer, and a really positive thing that came out of the hard time in my life was that I grew as a songwriter — and got to be better friends with the people that I write the songs with, just really getting that honest with each other and sitting there on a porch drinking wine. And I did spend a lot of time being quiet and being by myself. That’s part of a journey anyone has to take in their life, and sometimes we don’t slow down enough to take it. I’m glad I did, because now I have stories to share,” she said.
