The doves are surely crying after the devastating and unexpected loss of music icon Prince.

The “Purple Rain” singer passed away at age 57, TMZ initially reported. His body was found at his Paisley Park compound in Minnesota early this morning.

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57,” the pop icon’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, said in a statement (quote via the Washington Post). “There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time.”

Prince had been battling the flu for several months, having recently canceled several tour dates and been hospitalized last week. His private plane recently made an emergency landing in Illinois after concerts in Georgia.

The legendary singer was best known for songs “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy” and “1999.”

In honor of the legend, re-live Darius Rucker’s cover “Purple Rain.” The South Carolina native has often covered the song while on tour.
