Not only is Nashville coming back, but it’s bringing a whole lot of new drama with it into the upcoming season five premiere of the series.

The popular television drama, revived by CMT after receiving a surprise cancellation from ABC earlier this year, is intertwining more intense plotlines between new and old characters alike and the writers are not holding back this time around. Rewinding back to the cliffhangers they left off for season four, it looks like relationships will change and music will become a huge influence on how the characters interact.

Highlights briefly shown for the anticipated season involved tension between Deacon Claybourne (Charles Esten) and Rayna James (Connie Britton), the fate of Juliette Barnes’ (Hayden Panettiere) flight, the back-and-forth of Gunnar (Sam Palladio) and Scarlett (Clare Bowen) as well as a possible new love interest for Maddie (Lennon Stella).

But the Christmas present to all the Nashies doesn’t stop at just one little trailer—news also broke out that the show will air one hour of the two-hour premiere special on December 15 to give fans a sneak peek at what lies ahead for season five.

Nashville will make its grand return to television with a two-hour season premiere on Thursday, January 5 at 9 p.m. ET on CMT.
