Monday night’s broadcast of the Emmy-winning singing competition show, The Voice, served as the final night of the nail-biting knockout round, when contestants sang their hearts out for a spot in the live shows.

So far judges have had their share of near-impossible decisions on which competitors to send home and who to take a chance on, and this week was no different. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill served as mentors again this week, spreading their wisdom to make the trophy-hopefuls the best they can be.

First up for Team Blake Shelton was country-rocker Austin Allsup vs. the young, but charming, Gabe Brousaard. Allsup blends genres with his rendition of Tom Petty’s “Breakdown,” delivering rock-n-roll screams and an exhilarating performance. Broussard took the stage to show off his talent via Bruno Mars’ “It Will Rain.” Despite his best effort, Broussard’s performance wasn’t enough to get him past Allsup and he was sent home.

Next up for Shelton’s dreams for another title were Karlee Metzger and Dana Harper. Harper channeled her subdued melodic roots James Morrison’s “You Give Me Something.” Her rehearsals left McGraw speechless and the same sentiment carried over to the knockout round. Metzger competed with Kelly Clarkson’s “Invincible,” but didn’t have what it takes to move on to the next round.

Though there is not a strong country presence during season 11 of The Voice, many contestants are putting their own spin on country hits. Team Miley Cyrus’ Josh Halverson performed a gritty rendition of McGraw’s “Whiskey and You” and Aaron Gibson put a soft-rock spin on Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.” Both performances were outstanding and resulted in Gibson continuing on to the next round. It wasn’t goodbye for Halverson, however, as he was stolen by Team Alicia Keys.
