Josh Turner has been a proud supporter of the Grand Ole Opry ever since he made his debut in 2001 when he performed “Long Black Train.” And after six years of performing on the famed stage, Turner received his surprise invitation to become an official member.

In September of 2007, Turner was tasked with presenting Hee Haw star Roy Clark with a plaque commemorating his musical and personal accomplishments. What Turner didn’t know, was that on the back of the award he just handed to Clark was an envelope with a very special request.

“Well, actually this is for you, Josh,” said Clark as he opened the letter. “It says, Josh Turner, how would you like to formally become a member of the Grand Ole Opry?”

Emotion swept over Turner’s face as his eyes began to tear up and a roaring audience rose to their feet to congratulate him.

“I’ll tell you, of all the things giving and receiving awards, when I saw the moisture in your eyes, that is what live and love and music is all about,” Clark summed up perfectly.

With a full smile on his face, the “Hometown Girl” singer joyfully accepted his invitation.

“Hee Haw was one of my first introductions to country music and ever since then I have always loved country music and always been willing to fight for it,” Turner said. “My debut back in 2001, I never thought I’d be getting inducted this soon, but if this is an invitation, I say yes.”

It has been almost a decade since that memorable milestone in Turner’s career and he still continues to push forward. His sixth studio album, Deep South, is slated for release this Friday, March 10.
