When it came time to ask Maren Morris for her hand in marriage, Ryan Hurd had no idea what to plan. While the “Love in a Bar” singer knew he wanted to marry Morris, the timing to get down on one knee never quite worked out. It was during a trip home to Michigan over the Fourth of July weekend that he finally decided the moment was right.

“We were at my family’s lake house up in Michigan and it was Fourth of July weekend and we had, like, 15 people at this little house,” Hurd told Rare Country. “I had had that [ring] in my pocket for a while, and I was just looking for a good time. I woke up on the 3rd and I said to myself that that was the day. But there was no point where we were alone together, and so we jumped in the boat and had about 20 minutes together. It was really special. It was a beautiful night and there weren’t a lot of people on the water. It was July 3, so there were fireworks all around the lake and I told her I bought all those fireworks just for her.”

Morris was taken by surprise over the proposal, having no idea that her life was about to change.

“I really had no idea, and I had sweats on and my glasses — did not look cute at all — so that’s how I knew he was serious,” she joked with CMT’s Cody Alan.

The couple announced their engagement several days later with a series of photos posted to Instagram, including one of them heading out on the lake in a small boat.

They first met during a songwriting session in Nashville several years ago and penned a song later recorded by Tim McGraw. Since then, both have been signed to major label deals at Sony Music Nashville. Morris hit the country scene hard with her debut album HERO and took home a GRAMMY Award earlier this year. Hurd released his debut single, “Love in a Bar,” which is based on his love story with Morris.
