And to think they were going to let fans off with a simple happy ending…

(Warning: Spoiler alerts ahead!)

The series finale of ABC’s Nashville aired Wednesday night (5/25) and came with a lot of resolve for the majority of the character cast, including a powerful reconciliation between Rayna and her legally emancipated daughter, Maddie, and a heart-melting kiss between Scarlett and Gunnar after Scarlett revealed she was in love with him.

Ultimately though, the show ended on quite the dramatic note that left all fans with their jaws dropped as a major cliffhanger in one of the main character’s storylines ended the last scene of the show off. This scene alone got social media all up in a stir over the possibility of a fifth season due to its mysterious sendoff.

The hashtag, #bringbacknashville, was trending on Twitter throughout the finale last night among other Nashville-related tweets. The official Twitter account for Lionsgate TV, which was the lead studio for the show, sent out a message to fans saying, “#Nashies What a cliffhanger! But we won’t leave you hanging. There’s more story to be told. #bringbacknashville.”

Many of the Nashville cast members including Charles Esten and Chris Carmack watched the series finale together as it aired on ABC. They got active with their Twitter accounts as well, thanking the fans and the production team for all of the dedication they’ve given to the show throughout its four-season run.

So what’s next for the future of Nashville? It’s hard to say at this point, but ever since the show was unexpectedly cancelled, many people have banded together to fight for the show’s life. A fan-driven petition on Change.org was launched to support shopping the show around for other networks to pick up with no word back on the possibility of a television deal. The petition found great love from the fans, garnering 100,000 signatures within two weeks.

Keep your eyes and ears open for current news regarding the fate of Nashville and its possible return to the screen soon.
