Life is about to get real hectic for Thomas Rhett with the welcoming of two children within the next few months, as well as the release of a third album from the country star. But he’s not letting anything stop him from exploring all of his options this time around.

Although he’s keeping pretty mum about the various details regarding the upcoming project, Rhett took a solid chunk out of his time at the beginning of the year to focus in on his craft and deliver his best record to date. Relying on his pop-meets-country sound to guide him through the next step in his musical catalogue, the country star admitted that collaborations and surprises will definitely be in store. One of the many featured artist cameos happens to be pop star and actress Selena Gomez, who will make her country debut as a part of Rhett’s release.

“I took all of January and made album three,” Rhett explained recently. “We cut 22 songs, which is way too many songs, and I think the next few months is going to be singing all those, getting them all mixed and then trying to narrow down which ones are the keepers. But it’s really all over the place.  There’s a lot of cool collaborations on the record. My dad is actually featured on the record, which is pretty cool. I’m trying to single handedly revive his 90s country music career.  But uh, no, it’s gonna be a fun record.”

Getting his hands on every ounce of inspiration triggered Rhett to move toward a different direction than previously heard in his past hit singles. Although he’ll never leave behind his Southern roots, Rhett seems ecstatic about the possibilities of creating a sonic blend of true country music and that pop flair heard throughout Top 40 radio.

“I definitely gravitate in a pop direction, but at the end of the day there is no changing this voice that God gave me. It’s Southern by the grace of God. And I’m not sure I could make it sound any more pop than this song right here. I’m just a country singer, man. And if my songs happen to fit one day in a pop space, and it happens to make sense on Top 40 radio, that’d be great,” Rhett said to GQ recently.

Rhett’s first single off of his anticipated new record, “Craving You,” features Maren Morris and is currently playing on country radio.
