Although Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren, are all loved up with their two little girls in tow, their fairytale romance wasn’t all roses and happiness from the start.

The two met as young kids in grade school and tried dating during their high school years, but college tore them apart and separated them into their own individual lives. Falling for other people in their twenties, Rhett and Lauren felt like they were destined to not be with one another until the country singer finally got the nerve to tell his now wife how much she meant to him. The rest is, well, history.

But what would have happened if Rhett had never spoken up? Well, the singer says, things could’ve turned into the story of his latest single, “Marry Me.”

“’Marry Me’ I think is going to be the song on the record that so many people are going to be like, ‘What is this?’ like, ‘Why would he even talk about this?’ But what I think is really cool about this song is that it really does pertain to mine and Lauren’s story because before we got married, I dated a girl for like five years that I thought I was going to marry. She dated a guy like five years that she thought she was going to marry. And that song is basically about me being the narrator and being like, ‘What would my life have been like if I had never gone over to her house and told her how I felt about her?’ So this song is kind of a make-believe story about me basically being invited to her wedding, and never getting the chance to tell her how I felt about her for so long, which I just thought was an interesting way to kind of write a sad song. Because it could have been my life very easily,” he explained.

Only a few months later, the two broke things off with their significant others to reconnect with one another and it turned out to be a great risk to take as they ended up with their happily ever after that many fans admire and adore.

“Marry Me,” which can be found on Life Changes, is available to purchase and stream online now.
