And just like that, Thomas Rhett has his 10th No.1 single. After just 16 weeks, “Marry Me” has claimed the Billboard Country Airplay chart’s top spot.

The song was inspired by the “what ifs” when it comes to his relationship with his wife, Rhett previously explained.

“What I think is really cool about this song is that it really does pertain to mine and Lauren’s story because before we got married, I dated a girl for like five years that I thought I was going to marry,” he recalled. “She dated a guy like five years that she thought she was going to marry. And that song is basically about me being the narrator and being like, ‘What would my life have been like if I had never gone over to her house and told her how I felt about her?’”

“So this song is kind of a make-believe story about me basically being invited to her wedding, and never getting the chance to tell her how I felt about her for so long, which I just thought was an interesting way to kind of write a sad song. Because it could have been my life very easily,” he concluded.

The song’s ascension on the chart comes just after Rhett’s smash, “Unforgettable,” also took the top spot. The fact that these two songs soared to No.1 is baffling to the Georgia native, for the simple reason that they were written on the same day.

“Anybody that walked on the bus like, ‘You want to hear a new song?’ Because I think we were just so pumped about those two and really just two kind of things I’d never really done before melodically and content-wise. And so just looking back, it’s pretty nuts that we wrote those in the same day,” Rhett shared with NASH Prep of the tunes he wrote with Shane McAnally, Ashley Gorley and Jesse Frasure.

Both “Unforgettable” and “Marry Me” appear on Rhett’s third studio album, Life Changes.
