Today, Dolly Parton celebrates her 71st birthday. Throughout those 71 years, Parton has proved time and time again that she is more than a one-trick-pony with accomplishments as a vocalist, television host and actor. In 1980 she expanded her resumé even more so by making her feature film debut in the comedy 9 to 5, the movie that inspired the hit song of the same name.

9 to 5 tells the story of three working women who plot to overthrow their sexist boss. Parton co-stars with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin as her co-conspirators who eventually kidnap the man in charge and try to blackmail him, all while making positive changes in the office during his “absence.”

While on set, Parton wrote the hit song that shared its name with the film. The track was also used as the theme song for the movie and went on to win Parton two Grammy Awards: Country Song of the Year and Female Country Vocal of the Year.

The movie currently finds itself at No. 74 on the American Film Institute’s ranking of the funniest American movies of all time. During its tenure at the box office, it grossed over $100 million, marking it as a huge success.

9 to 5, the film, went on to inspire a short-lived television series that starred Parton’s younger sister. In 2007, Parton revealed that she was in the process of writing the music for a Broadway adaptation. “9 to 5” made its Broadway debut in April of 2009.

Later on this month, the original film cast will reunite at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Parton and Fonda will be presenting Tomlin with the Lifetime Achievement Honor for her career and humanitarian accomplishments. The 23rd annual SAG Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
