Legendary rock icon Tom Petty has died at age 66 after suffering from cardiac arrest. According to multiple reports, the singer was found unconscious on Sunday night (Oct. 1) and was rushed to the hospital.

TMZ reported first that upon arriving at the hospital, he was described as having no brain activity and it was decided that he’d be removed from life support.

The singer’s career spanned more than 40 years, with his first hit “Breakdown” in 1977. The singer notched more hits including “I Won’t Back Down” and “Free Fallin’” and earned three GRAMMY Awards.

Throughout his career, many other acts celebrated his music by sharing their own interpretations of his famous songs, including covers of “Free Fallin’.” Country singers from Maren Morris to Chris Stapleton and Dan + Shay to Lady Antebellum have performed the megahit for fans everywhere. Petty and his legendary band, The Heartbreakers, recently wrapped a 50-plus date tour, with three performances at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles a week ago. He had two upcoming dates scheduled in New York City on November 8 & 9.
