Top Five Moments From the 49th Annual CMA Awards

The 49th Annual CMA Awards was definitely one for the books. It was filled with a number of great performances by some country music veterans, as well as first-time performances from the newcomers. The show had laughs and tears, unexpected surprises and new music. However, we’ve narrowed it down and picked our Top Five Moments from the CMA Awards.

The first of our moments is obviously Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley’s always hilarious opening monologue. They two talked about doing this year’s most popular dance, Whip and Nae Nae. They also talked about this year’s biggest break up… Miss Piggy and Kermit the frog.

Another highlight of the night was when three-time winner Chris Stapleton combined forces with Justin Timberlake with a performance that will live in infamy. The two performed George Jones’ “Tennessee Whiskey” and Timberlake’s “Drink You Away.” It was a performance that had us flailing our “church hands” in the media room.

One of our favorite performers is Dierks Bentley and he always delivers. The Arizona native performed his powerful hit, “RISER,” with the help of violinist Lindsay Stirling. The combined effort of these two performers gave a performance that had goosebumps running up and down our arms.

In one of the biggest surprises of the day, Eric Church dropped a brand new album. He sent copies to members of his fan club, The Church Choir, and performed the title track, “Mr. Misunderstood,” during the broadcast. It was simple and elegant performance from the Entertainer of the Year nominee.

The story of the night, however, was Chris Stapleton. The singer won every award he was nominated for, including Male Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year and New Artist of the Year. Fans may have been surprised by the choice, even questioning who Stapleton is, but we’re sure you’ve heard his music before. He’s a co-writer on Luke Bryan’s hit “Drink A Beer,” Thomas Rhett’s “Crash and Burn,”and Darius Rucker’s “Come Back Song,” among others.
