Trace Adkins may be gearing up to release a new album, but he’s not ready to hang up his acting hat quite yet. The star is slated to appear in the film I Can Only Imagine, the next faith-based project from directors Jon and Andrew Erwin.

According to Deadline, the film will tell the story behind the song made famous by MercyMe, as well as the life story of the songwriter and group’s lead singer Bart Millard.

Joining the cast alongside Adkins will be Dennis Quaid (The Parent Trap, The Rookie), Cloris Leachman (Young Frankenstein, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), Broadway actor J. Michael Finley (Les Miserables), Madeline Carroll (Swing Vote, Machine Gun Preacher) and Priscilla Shirer (War Room). Earlier this week, the “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” singer posted a photo of himself with Quaid, who stars in the much-buzzed-about new film A Dog’s Purpose, on the set of I Can Only Imagine.

This isn’t the first time singer has worked with the Erwins as they directed him in the film Mom’s Night Out, which starred Adkins, Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond, The Middle) and Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy, Daria).

The song “I Can Only Imagine” was released by MercyMe in 2001 and has been certified 2x platinum by RIAA for sales of over two million digital downloads, making it the first, and currently only, Christian song to achieve 2x platinum certification.
