With every week on The Voice narrowing down the rosters to the final contestants, the singers must step their games up during the live performances in order to win over the hearts (and votes) of viewers.

When the Top 12 took the stage on Monday (April 23), many of the team members opted for songs to show their growth throughout the show and represent their journey to their coaches on how far they’ve come from that first audition.

Spensha Baker from Team Blake definitely gave it her all during her strong rendition of Trisha Yearwood’s “Down on my Knees.” Not only did the song show off Baker’s ability to bring soul into the sound of country music, it also allowed the singer to fight for her rightful place to move on to the next round and justify Shelton’s decision to keep her on his squad for the next episodes to come.

Taking a rather different note out of a country playbook, Pryor Baird tried his hand at a bit rowdier rendition of Keith Anderson’s “Pickin’ Wildflowers.” Bringing his guitar and his rasp to raise the energy, Baird seems to have planted his roots in the rock-country vibe and doesn’t plan to detach himself from it anytime soon. While his notes hold the song together and he seems to not miss a thing, his performance reminded fans of previous ones rather than a constant growing pattern.

Jennifer Hudson’s “One Night Only” has nothing on Kyla Jade as the singer catches everyone’s attention from the very first note. The deep tone captivated the crowd as Jade lured them all in to blow them away with a show-stopping finale. She even got Kelly Clarkson bouncing up and down from her seat, and Shelton’s round of applause approval during her highest (and most sensational) note.

New episodes of The Voice air on Monday and Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
