Album Review: Joey + Rory’s ‘Hymns That Are Important To Us’

The story of Rory and Joey Feek has gotten a lot of press of late. The world continues to follow the couple’s love story, as well as her valiant fight against cancer. It’s heartbreaking, but yet at the same time it’s also been inspirational to watch.

At the same time that the couple found out that the cancer had returned, they ventured into the recording studio to cut a project that has always been near to their heart – their first ever album of Gospel standards. It’s a natural fit, because more than just about any other musical act, the Feeks have lived their faith through their music and their actions. Songs like “That’s Important To Me” and the touching “When I’m Gone” show that focus has always been there.

With this album, the couple returns to the music of Joey’s youth – the songs she heard in Church growing up in Indiana. Classics like “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” and “I’ll Fly Away” brim with a touching reflection of their faith that will no doubt warm even the hardest heart. And….if you have any part of you that believes in a higher power, their performance of “It Is Well With My Soul” will render you speechless. In spite of everything they are going through, to still have that fire to proclaim a wish for God’s will is a trait to be admired. Beautiful simply doesn’t do it justice.

If it’s God’s will…..yes, I am a believer, this will not be the last time we hear these two song together. In either case, this is an album that will make you the better simply by listening to it – and that’s a rare trait these days!
