Review: Steve Moakler EP

After listening to the new EP from Steve Moakler, I am convinced of one thing – I need to go back and listen again…and again…and again. I will be the first to admit that unless you are a very traditional based singer, it usually takes me a few listens to effectively “Get It.” But, I wasn’t too deep into “Steel Town,” the opening cut on this EP before I knew this guy is pretty special.

While he looks and sounds as slick as any of the newer acts out there, there’s a definite realness to his music. The lyrics of “Steel Town” are ones that you can simply tell that he has lived while growing up in (where else?) Pennsylvania. He doesn’t try to make the lifestyle of a mill worker sound like that of a dead end…he leaves it up to you, and the result is pretty effective.

J100

He then turns romantic with the to-the-point lyrics of “Suitcase,” which is a highlight – as is the driving sound of “Jealous Girl.” The song quite possibly could be the best-produced cut on the disc, with its’ churning feel that makes you want to turn the radio up while driving down a long highway. The lyrics are winners as well. That’s one of the things that sets Moakler apart. A song like “Summer Without Her” has been around the block before in various forms and lyrical content. But, he takes the song to a higher place as a result of his talent.

The EP wraps up with the fun “Love Drunk,” which is the perfect song for summer fun – complete with plenty of personality and some grooving guitar licks that are reminiscent of the 60s sounds. This is good stuff all the way around…..the only thing is it needs a few more cuts….so Steve, give us some more…soon!
