During a week as hectic as CMA Fest, anything can happen. Keeping in the spirit of spontaneity, Little Big Town surprised the Grand Ole Opry audience by bringing out Pharrell for his Opry debut.

Introducing him to the famous country stage for the first time, Pharrell joined the four-piece group to play a song off their new album he produced called Wanderlust. Nonetheless, there was a big country welcome for the pop mogul.

“You know, he’s from Virginia and he loves country music,” said Karen Fairchild as they prepared their performance together.

While the collaboration seems like a shock, the artists’ worlds collided when they seized the opportunity to work together on a fun side project for Little Big Town. Infusing Southern elements into pop-heavy songs, they all worked together to create Wanderlust, coming out June 10.

“Once we met Pharrell—we met here in Nashville—it was just instant joy,” said Philip Sweet in a video posted by Associated Press.

Taking his roots from the South and combining them with Little Big Town’s country flair made for the perfect blend of cool harmonic sounds.

“If I’m from the South and I work with people who are from the South and we all love things that are Southern, at the very least, the music will be Southern,” Pharrell said of the influence.
