Throwback Thursday: Tim McGraw and Faith Hill Said ‘I Do’ 20 Years Ago Today

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill tying the knot and becoming country music’s ultimate superstar couple.

Country songs are often littered with stories of heartbreak, but you won’t find that in McGraw and Hill’s love story. The pair met in Nashville at a radio event and that relationship lead to Hill opening for McGraw’s 1996 tour.

The surprise here though is Hill was engaged to another man, producer Scott Hendricks, when her and her future husband first met. Over the course of their tour together, the pair quickly fell in love and the rest is history.

“If someone is going to judge my character because I was engaged to somebody and then I left him for somebody else — ‘Oh, okay, now she’s a sl** and a bad person’ — I can’t control that,” Hill told PEOPLE. “But I wasn’t about to let Tim slip through my hands.”

In June of 1996 in Grand Junction, Colo., Hill and McGraw were playing the Country Jam Festival. McGraw said before he took the stage, he asked Hill for her hand in marriage, but had to wait until the end of his set before he got his answer.

“I’d joked around with her about getting married, and so … I looked at her, I grabbed her by the hands before I went onstage. She had already done her show. And I said, ‘I’m really serious. I want you to marry me,'” he recalled in a video he posted telling of the event that changed his life.

“She laughed and she said, ‘We’re at a country music festival in a trailer house, and you’re asking me to marry you?’ And I said, ‘Yeah.’ So I went onstage.”

When the “May We All” singer walked off stage, Hill had written “Yes, I’m going to be your wife,” with a Sharpie on his mirror, surrounded by lipstick kisses.

As we all know, they went on to get married and welcomed three beautiful daughters in the world.

Though it has been 20 years, the couple is still as strong as ever. On Tuesday night (Oct. 4) they announced a 2017 world tour, with dates spread throughout North America.

Happy anniversary Faith and Tim, and thanks for being #relationshipgoals for the rest of us.
