Chris Stapleton has had a monumental year since claiming numerous awards at the CMAs, ACM and Grammys, but one of his most memorable moments was when he released the music video for “Fire Away.”

The powerful clip was directed by Tim Mattia and stars actors Ben Foster and Margarita Levieva. It depicts a young couple’s blissful relationship that takes a turn for the worse when the woman’s mental health condition takes over.

Stapleton, who saw the video in a dream, had hoped he wouldn’t have to make a cameo.

“I didn’t know Ben Foster and I love him as an actor and always kind of pictured a real actor and not me trying to act in the video,” Stapleton told Sounds Like Nashville backstage at his ACM Awards rehearsal. “I tried to not be in at all and the label’s like ‘no, you’ve got to be in it for like two seconds.’ So I was like okay and so I agreed to be in it for two seconds because I’m not an actor and don’t claim to be, but I thought the treatment that we gave the video and Tim and everybody that came together to make that video, it wound up being a really powerful thing.”

The clip is one Stapleton is proud of and hopes helps people in their time of need. “It just was a very organic kind of thing that unfolded into hopefully what is a good piece of art and then also something that might help somebody.”
