Dave Fenley Looks Back in ‘Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days)’

Dave Fenley opens a window to a simpler time in a new cover of The Judds’ “Grandpa (Tell Me ‘Bout the Good Old Days),” premiering its family-focused video on Sounds Like Nashville today (August 19).
Featuring a back-to-basics presentation of Fenley’s powerful, double-barreled vocal and acoustic guitar, the track finds a former contestant on NBC’s The Voice speaking to a world on the brink. Originally released in 1986, the nostalgic ode made us consider what truly matters and who we are as a people, and that theme is certainly just as poignant today.
Filmed on a picture-perfect front porch as Fenley sings and reminisces with his own family, the video serves as a touching reminder that good times aren’t too far gone … and offers hope they’ll soon come back.
“This song was huge when I was a kid,” Fenley says of the tune. “The melody and the lyric was so simple that it couldn’t be anything but honest. I recall my dad singing along and teaching me the harmony part for it and am super proud that he got to be in this video all these years later. I think this song’s message is even more powerful now than it was 35 years ago. This song is all about bringing back the simpler times when God and family came first. Let’s try that! This world has gone a little bit crazy but there’s nothing that He can’t fix.”
Fenley’s version of the track is available for download now, just one of a series of tributes following loving renditions of Lionel Richie’s “Stuck On You,” Travis Tritt’s “Help Me Hold On” and more. After appearing on Season 15 of NBC’s The Voice, Fenley now lives in Nashville with his wife, Amy.
