Laura Bell Bundy’s Star-Studded ‘Get It Girl, You Go’ Is the Empowering Anthem We Need
This is the girl power anthem we all need right now!
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Women’s Suffrage this week, Laura Bell Bundy released the music video for her anthemic new song “Get It Girl, You Go.” The upbeat tune of female empowerment features countless cameos from high-profile women including Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Cecily Strong, Samantha Bee, Ingrid Michaelson, Mickey Guyton, Tonya Pinkins, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Annaleigh Ashford and Chrissie Fit, among others.
On “Get It Girl, You Go” Bundy shares vocals alongside jazz recording artist Shoshana Bean and Tony Award winner Anika Noni Rose. All the while, the nearly four-minute video clip includes several women singing along to the uplifting saxophone-driven tune and features all the female democratic candidates running for national office in 2020.
“This video celebrates how far women have come in the last 100 years including getting the right to vote, the right to join the work force, the right to earn a college degree, and to run for public office,” Bundy says in a statement. “This year we have a record number of women running for Congress. As a line from the song says: ‘It’s time to run the world, we’re taking over this place. Welcome to the future, it was worth the wait!’ I wanted to feature the women running for public office as well as the public [female] figures that support them.”
A montage of clips that span marches and protests for female rights from the past 100 years further the song’s memorable message. “Never tell this woman she should know her place,” Bundy croons to the driving beat and throwback musical features that praise women for breaking the glass ceiling. Fittingly, the video was edited, animated, and produced entirely by women, including editors Hannah Bacher and Jasmine Lewis, animator Clair Chin and produced by Ariel Zucker from CNT Productions.
“The song is very important to show little girls and young women what they are capable of, and particularly in this moment with Kamala Harris as the first Black woman Vice Presidential candidate,” Rose says. “Black, and Indian. And the daughter of immigrants. Quite a moment.”
“Get It Girl, You Go” will be featured on Bundy’s upcoming 2021 album Women of Tomorrow. The project is the follow-up to 2015’s Another Piece of Me.
