Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Nigel Lythgoe, producer of American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, and his son Simon will launch a new show called CMT's Next Superstar in search of America's “next great country star.”

The 10 episode series will follow contestants as they live together and compete for the title of “next great country star.”

“This isn't just a singing competition, the contestants will also be judged on their song writing, radio interviews and music videos,” Nigel Lythgoe said in a statement. “We're looking for more than just a singer, we want the complete creative, talented package – performer, personality and writer. We want the next country superstar.”

EW reports, “Contestants will participate in a series of business related challenges and performance rounds. Like all of the competition shows on TV these days, one finalist will be eliminated each week and America will have the final vote to determine who wins.”

“One of the reasons this show stands out from the rest is that it's the only show where the contestants take an active role in deciding who's in the band,” added Simon Lythgoe in a statement. “Whereas contestants must sing in different genres on other shows, this is all about country music. Our contestants will turn some world-renowned songs from other genres like pop or motown, pour their soul into it and make it country.”

CMT's Next Superstar which will premiere in April. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the winner of the competition will be announced during the 2011 CMT Music Awards and will score a spot on this year’s CMT Tour.
