Darius Rucker Shares What’s Been Getting Him Through The Pandemic
How are you getting through the pandemic?
This year has been hard for people all over as the world was turned upside down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For touring musicians like Darius Rucker, what was once a busy year of shows has quickly turned into a summer of no touring. Rucker says not seeing any shows in his future is a tough reality, but he’s turned to a few things in life to get him through. One positive of the pandemic is that he has strengthened his friendships with a few fellow country artists.
“Brad [Paisley] and I got closer during quarantine,” he says. “Luke [Bryan] and I live five minutes from each other, so him and I have really gotten close.”
“Brett Young and I have gotten really close because we live in the same neighborhood and we play golf together, so him and I have gotten close,” he continues. “Cole Swindell — I see Cole all the time and Cole and I have gotten close too.”

The pandemic has also given Rucker the time he needed to finally learn a new skill that he’s been putting off: playing piano.
“The one thing that I think I’m really starting to do that I finally just said, ‘I have to do it,’ is I’m learning to play piano online,” he says. “You’re sitting around, I’ve got this big keyboard in my house that’s always sitting there, and I’m like, ‘Man.’ So finally, I’m going online and taking an hour a day, four or five days a week, and trying to learn how to play that thing.”
In addition to strengthening friendships and learning piano, Rucker, like many people, has been spending his free time watching TV, listening to music, and cooking. He shared that the TV show he’s been watching is Letterkenny, the music he’s been listening to has been Luke Combs’ What You See Is What You Get album and Jimmie Allen’s Bettie James EP, and the dish he’s been cooking is his mother’s chicken pot pie.
“Everybody here wants to have my chicken pot pie,” Rucker told reporters. “It’s awesome.”
