Gwen Stefani spilled the beans on her fiancé Blake Shelton’s marriage proposal this week, filling fans in on their super-sweet engagement story.

Appearing on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon to promote her new album, Let Me Reintroduce Myself, the pop star and TV personality explained how her country-singing hubby asked for her hand in marriage — news which the couple announced at the end of October. The whole thing came as a shock, Stefani admitted … even though she was “in that place in my head,” since she and Shelton had been together since 2015. Here’s how it happened.

First the “Minimum Wage” singer asked Stefani’s father for permission, taking the opportunity to do things old school a few weeks earlier on Stefani’s birthday. Then, during what seemed like a random day on Shelton’s ranch, he surprised the whole family. It may not have been the most elaborate proposal, but it sure was true to Shelton’s country-boy roots.

“Blake had this ring, like, in the side of his truck,” Stefani told Fallon with a beaming smile. “And when I say ‘the side of his truck,’ his truck is disgusting. It’s like things falling out, equipment, total rugged man stuff. … And we were, like, driving through trees and stuff, [so the ring] could just fall out at any point!

“Anyway it was pretty magical,” she went on, adding just a hint of happy sarcasm. “My brother was trying to cook a hobo stew at home, so he’s like ‘We gotta get back, it’s gonna burn!’ And my son is like ‘I gotta go to the bathroom!’ Nobody wanted to be there, and out of nowhere [Blake] just had this ring that was like in a cabinet when I opened it. I was like ‘Oh, get the fire starter!’ And then I opened it and was like ‘Are you serious?!'”

Unfortunately for fans, there was no video of the moment. But Stefani’s sister did snap a few candid photos, which is what the couple posted during their announcement. “Hey @gwenstefani thanks for saving my 2020… And the rest of my life,” Shelton wrote at the time.

Stefani goes on to say the couple have not set a date because of the ongoing COVID-19 disaster. “I was like ‘Blake, why couldn’t we have done it before? Now we can’t have a wedding with the pandemic,'” she jokes. But the pop star and judge on NBC’s The Voice seemed over-the-moon happy just to be engaged.

Gwen Stefani just released her new album, Let Me Reintroduce Myself, in December. And she can also add “country star” to her resume, after scoring two Number Ones with Shelton on “Nobody You” and “Happy Anywhere” last year.
