Miranda Lambert is re-doubling her efforts to get shelter dogs adopted, focusing more energy than ever on animals having a hard time finding a forever home. Her MuttNation Foundation will dedicate 2021 to the motto “Love Harder,” she says, aiming to dispel some of the myths that make people shy away from certain dogs.

Some shelter dogs are often hard to find homes for, Lambert explains. Pit mixes, senior dogs, black dogs, and dogs with disabilities are often overlooked by families looking to adopt — or they can even be seen as a potential danger. But according to Lambert, that is simply not the case.

“The truth is these dogs are the easiest to love, maybe because they need us the most,” she says. “But with so many misperceptions, people sometimes shy away from adopting them. I want to people to see the strong bonds and the special love that can be shared with these harder to get adopted dogs. So, I’m asking anyone who has adopted or is fostering a senior dog, a dog with disabilities, a pit mix or a wonderful big black dog, to send us their pictures and stories and help pave the way for others who may be considering giving one of these great pets a second chance and a forever home.”

Fans can help by uploading a photo and brief message about why they adopted one of those “easy to love” mutts at the MuttNation website, and each person who does will have the chance to win a one-of-a-kind Epiphone guitar signed by Miranda Lambert.

The campaign is officially underway and kicked off with help from country legend and fellow shelter-pet advocate Emmylou Harris (plus her senior pup, Jeter), who chatted with Lambert about why the cause is so important.

“It takes a special person to seek out special needs and senior dogs,” Lambert told her friend. “I guess I just want people to have an answer on what they bring to you.”

“The bring so much to your life,” Harris replied. “Maybe it’s because I’m an old dog myself, but I appreciate old age, and how maybe we just need a little more comfort and care.”

Miranda Lambert is up for five awards at this Sunday’s (April 18) ACM Awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year. And her new collab album, The Marfa Tapes, is out May 7.
