5 Ways to Have a Low-Key New Year’s Eve for 2017

The best memories are priceless. While that sounds rather sentimental and a tad cliché, it’s the laughs and the moments that make anyone remember the ultimate night out rather than how much you paid for the bill or what label you were wearing on your dress.

With New Year’s Eve quickly approaching, some people may be scrambling to create their own DIY parties to celebrate the welcoming of a new beginning. Granted, there may be major FOMO that you’re not one of the million watching the Ball drop in Times Square or dancing in some crowded club with confetti in your hair. But at the end of the day, making NYE a chill time is what we all need in life.

Here are just a few ideas to keep the frills at a minimum, but the memories at a maximum on the most celebrated night of the year:

  1. Pajama Party

Sure, NYE is the biggest night of the year and people all around the world will be throwing on their most glitzy and glamorous ensembles to shimmer brightly into 2017. But forget the gussied-up looks and throw on your comfiest PJ’s for the snuggliest night in you’ll ever be a part of! Because let’s get real: everyone’s favorite part of the day is coming home and curling up on the couch with a cup of hot tea in their favorite set of loungewear. Win, win.

  1. Potluck/BYOB

During the holidays, money can be really tight. Dropping major dollars on your family and friends results in a huge goose egg on the bank account by the end of the month, which makes it hard to spend a pretty penny for a night out on the town. One thing that always brings people together, though, is food. Invite all of your closest pals for a potluck a la New Year’s Eve, featuring each attendee’s signature dish. To ease the amount on the wallet even further, encourage everyone to bring by their drink of choice—as long as you supply the champagne toast, of course.

  1. Game Night

Nothing brings people together like a little light-hearted competition. Dust off those vintage board games and even throw in some new classics (Cards Against Humanity, anyone?) to really get your living room party started. And while alcohol is always optional, any game can be a drinking game if you try hard enough.

  1. Netflix and Chill (the ‘suitable for work’ way)

Yeah, yeah…we know what you’re thinking. Netflix and chill is slang for something dirty. Well, get your mind out of the gutter and into your ‘Trending Now’ section because binge-watching streamed television is the absolute best. For those who plan to have a simple date night with their boo or want to hang out with your girl squad, just select the show of your choice and voila! Night made! (Popcorn and wine optional).

  1. Karaoke Showdown

Start warming up your vocals, people, because it’s time for a friendly sing-off like no other. Gather your guests around the TV and grab two makeshift mics for a homemade version of Lipsync Battle. Whether you know all the words to “Friends in Low Places” or you fumble along the verses of “Dirt Road Anthem,” there will definitely be satisfaction guaranteed until the clock ticks midnight.
