April Kry Recreates ‘80’s Mercedes’ in Maren Morris Cover
Kry mixes the 90s with this modern Maren Morris track in her West Coast video version of "80's Mercedes."
Inspired by another fellow female newcomer in the country music industry, April Kry puts a spin on her take of Maren Morris’ latest single, “80’s Mercedes.”
Kry wanted to feed off the fun vibes of Morris’ vintage-meets-modern track by channeling in on the funky elements Morris mentions throughout the song. In the video exclusively premiered by Sounds Like Nashville, Kry got in the spirit of the retro-sounding tune by putting her own unique mix to it.
“I especially love the line, ‘I’m a 90’s baby in my 80’s Mercedes,’ personally because growing up, I was so influenced by 90’s country. Just like Martina [McBride], Faith [Hill], Shania [Twain], all those really strong voices of 90’s country. I just felt like it would be such a fun thing to do the cover in kind of 90’s country vein, so we produced it that way. We just wanted to make it fun and summery and kinda bring back that 90’s vibe a little bit to it,” Kry said to SLN.
Capturing the easygoing sound of the hit translated right on over to the making of the video thanks to Kry’s carefree personality and the classic West Coast location backdrop. Filmed in a secluded alleyway of Los Angeles, the team was determined to sneak in some sunshine and palm trees to add to the trendy track.
“We definitely made it look super summery and we wanted to make sure the Raybans were in there and all that,” she explained about the video. “We wanted to get palm trees in the back and that kind of L.A. summery look to it.”
Putting together her love of 90’s country with Morris’ pop-infused country tone, Kry definitely holds on to the “neon soul” of the song. Check out the exclusive premiere of Kry’s video cover of “80’s Mercedes” here on Sounds Like Nashville.
