Ashley McBryde released a cinematic music video for her current single, “One Night Standards,” on Thursday. The video finds McBryde, who plays a front desk clerk at a motel, witnessing a man she knows getting a room with someone he shouldn’t be with. McBryde’s character then alerts the man’s daughter to the situation, which in turn causes a dramatic event to unfold.

The video, directed by Reid Long and shot at the Drake Hotel in Nashville, serves as the first of a three-part storyline leading up to the release of McBryde’s sophomore album. McBryde says she and band member Chris Harris connected the dots between the songs on the album, which led to the idea for the corresponding videos.

“My manager John Peets and I had this idea to listen to the record and see what stories appeared — what threads of ideas were consistent in the songs we had gathered and what characters stood out,” McBryde says. “Low and behold, one night on the bus Chris Harris and I were having a few beverages after a show. I got out my sketch pad and we wrote down each song from the record and each character. It looked like a crazy road map. It looked like a child had drawn it.

“But there it was,” she continues. “A way to connect every song and every video. I showed it to Peets, and we put it in Reid Long’s hands. And the rest is history.”

The next two videos will be released in the coming weeks. In addition to readying her sophomore album, McBryde will soon be heading out on the road on her One Night Standards Tour, which kicks off January 30 in Birmingham, Alabama.
