Exciting newcomer Jenna Paulette brings the outlaw days of the American frontier into the present tense with her cinematic “Wild Like the West” video, and she’s giving a Sounds Like Nashville an exclusive look behind the scenes.

Filmed in her native Texas — because really, how could she not — and directed by Zack Dyer, the clip follows a pair of star-crossed lovers through a sort of time warp effect. Featuring real-life cowboy Dusty Whitford, the couple are seen in both modern times and as their bank robbing alter egos in the Old West, bringing Paulette’s slow-vibing anthem of living free and untamed to life.

The throwback clip is a visual feast for sure, full of sweeping shots of the Southern plains and highlighting Paulette’s effortless throwback style, but there’s more going on than first meets the eye. The singer-songwriter says she had a nasty accident right in the middle of filming, and you can see the results on screen. All those scratches on her face during the outlaw scenes? That’s not makeup.

“Shooting this video was so fun and truly ‘Wild Like the West,'” she explains. “I lost my steering trying to keep the hat I rented on while riding during the one the ‘Old West’ scenes, ran my horse into a tree and got a concussion while doing it! The sun was going down, so I didn’t have time to get to know the horse in the arena before we took off in the pasture.

“Lucky for me, all of the shots where I needed to look ‘good/modern-day’ were done and it added to the outlaw, Old-West look perfectly,” she continues. “I kinda love it when stuff like that happens — not the getting hurt part, but the fact that I am OK and the improvisation of it all made perfect sense with the plot of the video. It was crazy, but I still had the best time!”

Paulette’s tough-talking “Wild Like the West” was co-written with Jeb Gipson, and will appear on her upcoming EP Modern Cowgirl Vol. 1, out September 20.
