Blake Shelton rises like a redneck phoenix in the official video for his new single, “Come Back As a Country Boy,” imagining the origin story of a true backwoods superman.

Directed by Sophie Muller with a mix of thrilling digital effects and country-lifestyle pride, the entertaining clip is kind of like a mini-Marvel superhero movie … if it were filmed in the middle of nowhere with the star of NBC’s The Voice.

Beginning with a cosmic fireball that descends to Earth from outer space, Shelton emerges from a bonfire fully formed (and thirsty as a camel), ready to unleash the fiery fury of his supernatural small-town ways. He crushes beers with a single hand. He topples trees with just one boot. And he sings with the sinister snarl of a guy who’s not about to change for anyone, or anything.

“When I die, I wanna come back as a country boy / No, there ain’t no better life if you ask me / If my neck don’t come out red, then Lord, just keep me dead / ‘Cause a country boy is all that I know how to be,” goes the chest-thumping chorus.

“This video is an adventure,” Shelton says of the clip. “But at the end of the day it’s just me, my dog and my truck … and, of course, a beer. It’s me being a country boy in my favorite place on Earth.”

Released in October, the track is currently rising up the country radio charts as the third single from Shelton’s Body Language album, appearing on the Deluxe edition of the 2021 set. Recently, Shelton has also shared another track from that project — the tender song he co-wrote as a wedding gift to his pop superstar wife, Gwen Stefani, “We Can Reach the Stars.”

Meanwhile, Blake Shelton will appear on tonight’s 55th Annual CMA Awards as one of the night’s all-star performers, on hand to sing “Come Back As a Country Boy” live at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Hosted by Luke Bryan for the first time, the show will air on ABC at 8/7c.
