Carrie Underwood Conjures Spine-Tingling ‘Ghost Story’ as New Single
Carrie Underwood lets her voice soar for "Jesus, Take the Wheel."

Carrie Underwood takes romantic revenge beyond the grave in her new single, “Ghost Story,” promising to haunt an ex’s heart for forevermore.

Releasing the shadowy track on Friday (March 18), the country superstar says it’s an extension of the vengeance-seeking character she played in the mega-hit, “Before He Cheats” — but this one comes with a spine-tingling twist.

[“Ghost Story” is] “a different take on a revenge song, which is something I love to sing about,” Underwood admits. “Instead of smashing headlights, this scorned lover is letting her ex know that she will continue to haunt him no matter how hard he tries to forget her.”

Written by Josh Kear, Hillary Lindsey and David Garcia and co-produced by David Garcia and Underwood, the track features dreamy, ethereal country sonics, with digital strings and sweeps of synthesized passion matching the otherworldly vocal Underwood does so well. Meanwhile, the “Before He Cheats” connections go even deeper than surface level, since Kear was a co-writer on that original smash back in the day. Underwood says the writing team custom conjured “Ghost Story” to continue the tale.

“‘Ghost Story’ is a thrilling, dramatic song that David, Hillary and Josh wrote for me,” Underwood explains. “They are such talented, amazing songwriters who know me so well, and from the first time I heard it I knew I had to record it. I have always loved performing songs that tell a story and inspire some kind of cinematic imagery when you hear them, and that is definitely true of ‘Ghost Story.’ It creates a mood and a vibe that is different than anything else I’ve recorded before.”

“I’m gonna be your ghost story / That keeping you up all night memory / I’ll be haunting you, you’ll be wanting me / I’m gonna be your ghost story,” goes the haunting chorus.

The track likely marks the beginning of a new album cycle for Underwood, who spent 2020 and 2021 releasing her My Gift Christmas album and My Savior gospel set. Earlier this week, she was nominated for two 2022 CMT Music Awards for “If I Didn’t Love You” (with Jason Aldean) – Collaborative Video of the Year and Video of the Year — and that followed a ACM win for Single of the Year on March 7. Underwood is also up for two 2022 Grammy Awards: Bluegrass/Country/Roots Album of the Year for My Savior, and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “If I Didn’t Love You” with Aldean.

Looking ahead, she will continue her ongoing REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency at the Resorts World Theatre on March 23. Check out stunning photos of her first six shows here.
