Carrie Underwood Shares Moments Leading Up To CMA Fest Performance with Joan Jett

In the days leading up to their big collaboration at the Nissan Stadium stage during CMA Fest, it was excitement for Carrie Underwood, but a little more fear-of-disappointing for rock superstar Joan Jett.

Sharing in an interview backstage at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Underwood revealed the Jett was worried about crowd reception, especially when this wasn’t a rock audience.

“You can tell that she really wants to do a great job in this crowd. I don’t want to say,… it’s not like nervousness, it’s just wanting to do well and then she’s like ‘Because I know this isn’t my world and I just hope they know the songs…’” And without any hesitation, Underwood took that moment to assure her that that fear was far from reality because, like Underwood herself, “they’ve heard the songs, they’re going to know every word to every song.”

As for the “Southbound” singer, she was simply proud to be country music’s representative to Jett. “It’s going to be so much fun for me to get to show off our people to her. And show off our crowd and how amazing they’re going to be to her.”

Unsurprising to many, Underwood, like almost everyone else, has been a big fan of the “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll” singer, who she calls a “trailblazer…not just for women in her genre of music but women in general.”

“I’m a fan on every level, personally, professionally, and musically. It’s an honor that she has heard my name before and agree to come sing with me.”

The 2019 CMA Fest concert special airs on August 4 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.  For dates on the second leg of Underwood’s Cry Pretty Tour 360 this fall with Maddie & Tae and Runaway June, click here.
