Carrie Underwood is used to giving “soaring” awards show performances, but her appearance at the 2022 CMT Music Awards took that description to a whole new level.

Giving fans a taste of her ongoing REFLECTION: The Las Vegas Residency, she delivered a spectacular and athletic rendition of the beyond-the-grave revenge anthem, “Ghost Story,” rising into the air like a spectral Cirque du Soleil gymnast.

Pre-taped from her Resorts World Las Vegas stage, the performance began with Underwood standing eerily still at center stage, dazzling in a purple and white, gem-incrusted jumpsuit. Barefoot and with one leg exposed, she writhed and roiled while letting her otherworldly vocal free, as a team of arial dancers climbed and spun gracefully around her. Underwood wasn’t content to watch the action for long, though, and soon joined in like a weightless ghost of her own, ending the song completely upside down.

Underwood’s Las Vegas residency began in December but still has another round of dates in May, and judging by her CMT Music Awards performance, each one is theatrical masterpiece. Full of over-the-top pageantry and production sets, one-of-a-kind wardrobe pieces and Underwood’s electrifying vocals, the shows look extravagant even by Vegas standards. “Ghost Story” is part of her recently-announced new studio album, Denim & Rhinestones, which will arrive June 10.

The 2022 CMT Music Awards aired live from Nashville on CBS, marking the first time the genre’s only fan-voted awards show was broadcast on network television. The night was co-hosted by Kelsea Ballerini, actor Anthony Mackie and last-minute addition Kane Brown after Ballerini tested positive for COVID-19. Featuring a stacked lineup of featured performers, this year’s event also included Jason Aldean, Gabby Barrett and Miranda Lambert, plus collaborations between Cole Swindell and Lainey Wilson, Jimmie Allen, Monica and Little Big Town, Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd, and many more.
