Carrie Underwood Unveils ‘Softly and Tenderly’ Gospel Hymn

Carrie Underwood celebrates the quiet beauty of faith in the newly-released “Softly and Tenderly,” previewing her upcoming album of gospel hymns.
A delicate tribute to the compassion of Christ, the track finds Underwood’s chart-topping vocal in a very different setting from the one fans are used to — and sounding as pure and smooth as white satin. For five-and-a-half minutes, the hit maker delivers one gentle refrain after another, and with just a piano and strings behind her, offers a look at a project that’s been a lifetime in the making.
“Softly and Tenderly” is the first track revealed from Underwood’s upcoming album of gospel hymns, My Savior. The follow up to 2020’s My Gift Christmas album, the project is set to arrive just before Easter on March 26 (April 30 on vinyl), and the superstar has said she choose to record only hymns that were especially important to her … many that she’d been singing since she was a child. That appears to be the case with “Softly and Tenderly,” and Underwood also performed the stunning song during a moving In Memoriam tribute at the 51st Annual CMA Awards in 2017.
“This is an album I have always wanted to record. When I set out to choose these songs, I wanted to include the beautiful, familiar hymns I grew up singing in church,” Underwood explained in a statement about My Savior. “There are several songs I have performed in the past, like ‘Softly And Tenderly,’ ‘How Great Thou Art’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ that mean so much to me and I knew immediately we needed to record for the album. This music shaped who I am as a person and is the foundation of my career as a recording artist. I feel so blessed to get to share these songs with generations of people who love them as I do, as well as others who might be experiencing them for the first time.”
Carrie Underwood teams back up with her My Gift producer David Garcia for My Savior, and also brings gospel favorite CeCe Winans and NEEDTOBREATHE singer Bear Rinehart onboard for special duets. She recently shared the full track list for the upcoming project, which you can check out below.
