Carter Faith gives her early work a shadowy makeover with a new video series, reimagining three tracks as acoustic ballads for The Dusk Sessions.

Releasing stripped down versions of two singles and a mesmerizing Britney Spears cover, the country newcomer not only showcases her dynamic voice and solid song craftsmanship, but an emotional dark side. She mixes tenderness with a mysterious aura, sharing re-recordings of “Leaving Tennessee,” “Easy Pill” and “Baby One More Time.”

Each track features just a piano and Faith’s vocal — which is delicate and willowy, but also includes an intriguing rasp. And each time, the North Carolina peels back her song’s outer layers. “Leaving Tennessee” pulls more conflict from a relationship that would force her to leave her new home — and herself. “Easy Pill” looks at love from the perspective of an addict, craving a fix and not caring about the pain of coming down. And with “Baby One More Time,” Faith completely changes the original’s tone.

Adding an element of resigned emotional pain, Faith gives the iconic pop anthem a dark and shadowy retrofit, featuring minor chords and a wounded vocal. It’s just a sample of the emerging artist’s knack for outside-the-box thinking, and she calls it a way to celebrate her 2020 debut.

“I couldn’t have ever imagined receiving all of the support that came along with releasing my first three singles,” Faith tells Sounds Like Nashville. “And because of this, I knew I wanted to give each song a little more of a life by being able to get back in the studio and recording a stripped version of “Leaving Tennessee,” “Easy Pill,” and one of my all-time favorites, “Baby One More Time.”

Carter Faith premiered the video for “Sinners In a Small Town” on Sounds Like Nashville in October of 2020. The North Carolina native is an alumni of Belmont University and is signed to Altadena, a record label founded by the late busbee (Maren Morris, Carly Pearce).
