Sometimes, dirty little secrets can be fun. And that’s exactly what Clayton Anderson was going for in the concept and meaning behind the music video for his latest single, “In the Dark.”

Set among a rowdy group of line-dancing lovers, Anderson performs to the crowd within the confines of an underground honkytonk. With his eyes set on a girl in a little black dress, Anderson croons to win her over for a night to remember.

“The song’s kinda about a girl who wants to keep it on the DL, you know. And dudes are kinda douchebags—we like to kiss and tell. We can’t keep our mouths shut. Immediately, I thought of a speakeasy vibe—kinda secretive, kinda cool and went with that,” Anderson explained exclusively to Sounds Like Nashville during a recent phone interview.

The singer is thrilled with the finished product.

“I thought it came out great. I think the filming was great on it. It looked cool and had to get all snazzed up in a suit a little bit, so it was fun,” he shared. “I thought it came together really well. We filmed it actually really, really quick. We did it from like 7 o’clock to 4 o’clock, we had to be out of there ‘cause we were downstairs at The Sutler [in Nashville]. We had to get out! We had to get in, get out and it came together nicely for shooting it so, so quick.”

When it came to writing the tune, Anderson searched for the right lyrics to match the ever-present melody on rotation in his head. He knew that “In the Dark” needed to show off a sexy and sassy side with a bit of a rocking Midwestern flair to it.

“When I finally landed on it, it’s the story of this girl who’s a really classy girl and she just wants boys to keep it in the dark. She doesn’t want them to kiss and tell,” he said.
