Independent favorite Derek Jones sees past the surface level in his new track “Everybody’s Somebody,” premiering on Sounds Like Nashville today.

Written by Jones with James LeBlanc and out officially tomorrow (July 10), the soul-stirring track finds this Indiana native and veteran of the U.S. Navy remembering the homespun wisdom of his youth. Wrapping his bluesy, muscular vocal in tenderness and featuring some swampy dobro and tasty electric guitar, it’s a low-and-slow anthem of inclusion that’s all too poignant today. The world is a patchwork of diversity, he sings, and that’s the way it should be.

“I’ve always tried to live my life with the mindset of Everybody Is Somebody,” Jones tells SLN. “I try to treat people the way that I’d want to be treated. Whether you’re black, white, red, blue, green, left, right, rich or poor, it doesn’t matter to me. If you treat me nice, I’ll treat you the same! I’m hoping that we can all listen to this song, and that it will inspire us to just be good people and treat people accordingly! It’s really not that hard to be a good person!”

Jones says he wrote the big-hearted song last year at the revered FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, but it’s taken on a new layer of meaning in recent months. His upcoming EP, also called Everybody’s Somebody, is set to arrive this fall, and the rising talent promises to be back on the road with live shows as soon as possible. But for now he’s busy writing even more new material … and leaning on the truth he’s already found.

“I think that with everything that’s going on in our country today, this is a perfect time to release this song,” he says.
