An iconic country trio is set to make a comeback … eventually. The Dixie Chicks are once again teasing fans about an upcoming album release.
Posting a cryptic video to Instagram, the band’s Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire can been seen inside a recording studio, and they have a message to deliver. Taking turns while using a voice-and-appearance altering filter, the trio deliver one tantalizing piece at a time.
“Dixie Chicks!” says Maines. “Album!” adds Strayer. “Coming!” follows Maguire. And then, Grammy winning pop artist and producer Jack Antonoff enters the frame with a stoic “Someday,” both dashing hopes and inspiring the imagination at the same time. The only other clue given is the hashtag #dcx2019, suggesting the new music might roll out this year.
The Dixie Chicks achieved monumental stardom in the late ’90s and early 2000s with rootsy modern classics like “Wide Open Spaces,” “Cowboy Take Me Away” and more, only to fall out of favor after publicly making comments critical of then-President George W. Bush and the Iraq war.
They continued to record and tour sporadically, but their last studio album was released in 2006. Recently, speculation has risen over the possibility of a Chicks collaboration with Taylor Swift, and Antonoff’s appearance in the Instagram video will further that theory. The trio are seen in a portrait hanging on a wall in Swift’s recent “ME!” video (featuring Brendon Urie of Panic! At the Disco), and the country-turned-pop superstar worked with Antonoff extensively on her previous album, Reputation. Perhaps more details about that connection are soon to come.
